Why I Did Not Like The Movie Man of Steel

Although there are moments of Man of Steel that I truly enjoyed, I am completely baffled that so many others loved it. I would somewhat consider myself a cinephile, but I have learned to appreciate many different films. Ranging from independent films to blockbusters to mind numbing action films. With that said, I want it to be known that my comments are just my own and I understand everyone has an opinion and has varying tastes.

First of all, the amount of time spent with Russell Crowe was very odd. Laying out the villain is understandable and the idea of sending Superman to earth makes sense. The fight between them was ridiculous. The villain is a trained warrior while Russell Crowe is a scientist. How was that such a close fight? Additionally, his inclusion numerous times as a ghost was completely not needed. Why was it felt that was needed. In the original Superman, he was just a voice and it was so much more effective. While we are on the topic of Russell Crowe, what is up with the Superman suit. Was there a superman suit on each ship or just happen to be on that one? Either way, makes no sense. Not to mention, it was the perfect size. Come on.

Next, the Lois Lane interaction was not very strong. They did not speak all that much, but they started falling for each other rather quickly. She also found out his secret extremely fast. If that is all it took, every reporter would figure out the secret within days of coming into the spotlight. That is one of the great dynamics of the Superman story. The Lois Lane/Superman interaction and mystery. Since we are talking about relationships, what is up with the death of his father. He just watches him die in the tornado because his father says no so that people do not find out about him? He is

superfast! Just go grab him and move him a mile or so away from the back of the crowd. They could easily explain how he is still alive to others that notice he is gone. Instead, you just watch him die and do nothing? Great plan. The first Superman had him die of a heart attack. That is great as Superman can save so many people, but there was nothing he could do to help him. That is not the case here. He was just stupid.

The action of the film was decent, but it was just that. Just standard action. The kind of action you can see in many other films. Superman has so many more attributes that can be used to make the action stand out.

Finally, this is a quick note, but who in the world was the woman that was escaping with Perry White? The one that was trapped and he went back to save her. We get the tense music, the emotion as she is about to die and he is trying to save her. I have no idea who she was and why she was important. I did not care what was happening to her. It seems like something was missing from the film about her. Maybe it was on the cutting floor, but it made no sense why we were supposed to care about her living or dying
